Sold on Amazon UK as: BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 Monitor Light Bar with Wireless Controller

Is it worth it?

Yes, if this is the main present rather than one of several. The BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 clamps to the top of the monitor, runs from USB, lights the desk in front and the wall behind, and is set from a wireless dial rather than an app, which is everything the brief asked for. The catch is the cost: it is far dearer than a basic light bar that clips on and dims, and much of the difference pays for the backlight, the presence sensor and the dial. It is from a known brand, sold by BenQ's own UK store and dispatched by Amazon.

Is it for you?

Get it if
  • A brother who plays or works late with the main light off
  • A curved monitor, which the clamp is made to fit
  • The one big present, from a sister or from several of the family together
Skip it if
  • A stocking filler budget: basic light bars cost a fraction of this
  • A laptop on its own, with no monitor to clamp to
  • A monitor thinner than 0.43cm or thicker than 6cm at the top edge

The honest read

What wins you over
  • A known brand, sold by BenQ UK Webstore and dispatched by Amazon
  • Brightness and warmth set from a wireless dial with its own display, no app needed
  • Lights the wall behind the screen as well as the desk in front
  • Turns itself on and off when he sits down or leaves, and dims to the room
Where it gives
  • Far dearer than a basic monitor light bar, and over the top band this site uses, so it is a main present, not an extra
  • The wireless dial needs charging by USB, by the listing about every three months
  • At 50cm wide it is a lot of bar for a small monitor

BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2: questions answered

Does the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 need an app?
No. Brightness, warmth and modes are set from the wireless dial, which has its own display. The listing does not mention an app.
Will the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 fit a curved monitor?
Yes. The listing says the clamp fits monitors from 0.43 to 6cm thick, including curves from 1000R to 1800R.
How is the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 powered?
From USB at 5 volts. The listing includes a power adapter in the box, and the wireless dial charges separately by USB.
Why is the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 so much dearer than other light bars?
It adds a backlight for the wall behind, a sensor that switches it on when someone sits down, automatic dimming and a wireless dial. A basic light bar clips on and dims, and costs far less.
